Secondary Report February 2017

·         Academics

o   First Semester pass rate was 91% 143/156 students passed all of their classes.

o   Here are the pass rates from each semester.  1/11-93%   6/11-96%   1/12-99.25%   6/12-96.1%  1/13-96.8%    6/13-97.6%    1/14-96.9%     6/14-95.5%  1/15-99.25%, 6/15-97%, 1/16-96.6%, 6/16-97%, 1/17-91% While the number of students who failed a class doubled from last year, I truly believe the weather and water damage delays attributed to the higher numbers. If we see these lower pass rates after the end of spring semester I’ll be much more concerned. I think students who are not as successful academically need to be in the school building, and the weather just prevented that from happening over the last month of the semester.  The teachers also feel the percentages are reflective of holding students accountable to turning their school work in on time as well. A few students use the after school program regularly, and others could benefit from it but don’t take advantage of the opportunity. A letter was sent home to every student who failed a course suggesting the use of the after school program to get assignments completed at school, and teacher assistance when needed.

o    I have been keeping track of the percentage of students with all grades of “C” or higher. This semester was 122/149 students for 82%. Here is the history of those rates. 1/11-83%, 6/11-84%, 1/12-86%, 6-12-82%, 1/13-82%, 6/13-81%, 1/14-86%, 6/14-86%, 1/15-79%, 6/15-86.5%, 1/16-82%, 6/16-85%, 1/17-78%.   Our “C or better” rate dropped this semester, and I truly believe a lot of it is the same as above, where the students who need to be in the school building on a regular basis were the ones who were most affected by the weather delays.  If the numbers stay down after spring semester we’ll re-evaluate and try something different for next year.

o   Junior students took the ASVAB test as part of their Careers class activities. The test was administered online this year.

o   Seniors are completing the choice of their project for Senior Projects class. Here is the list of projects that seniors have decided on thus far.

·         Activities

o   Student Participation Rates

o   Team GPA’s are very close to GPA’s from recent years.

o   BPA had 14 students qualify for state (67%).

o   Music students participate in the Jazz Festival Feb. 23-25.

o   Jazz Concert with the University of Idaho will be in Moscow at the UI Music Building on Monday February 27^th, 6:30pm.

·         Athletics

o   Girls basketball District Tournament began Jan. 31^st for Genesee. We were the 5^th seed and were out of the tournament after the loss to Troy on Feb. 4^th.

o   Boys basketball District Tournament begins on Feb. 13^th for Genesee. Seeding to be determined February 8th. Currently we’re 4^th, and we will end up either 3^rd or 4^th.

o   JH Bball begins February 13th.

o   Spring sports first practice will be Feb. 24th.

·         Vision 21

o   There was a PRIDE Assembly on Feb. 3rd. Ten students completed the semester with perfect attendance, and received $20 Happy Day gift cards. Students were also chosen from the raffle and received gifts cards. Mr. Morrow’s Leadership class organized the games part of the assembly and students had fun participating in the games. 89 students (57%) had zero tardies for Fall Semester, and they were recognized and received a snack item. The percentage was 14% higher this year, and in real numbers 35 more students than last year.

o   Mr. Hanson and the “Terrorism in the Modern World” class organized and presented materials to the secondary students on January 27^th in honor of Human Rights Day. The students also used their laptops in a couple of the sessions interactively, and completed an online survey at the end to give feedback to the class.

·         Rec District update

o   Once the snow melts there will be continued work on the softball fields as well as re-sodding the baseball field. Much of the work is dependent on the weather.
